I agree with Bill-bulbs like a deep lose soil so that their roots can spread
out.
To many times the bulbs are planted sitting on hard clay and when the roots
are formed in the late summer-fall they just run into soil they cannot move
threw.
This greatly effects the ability of the bulb to collect nutrients and as a
result flowering and bulb size.
