Side vine theory
My friends,
Due to some good and bad experience last year, I have come to a hypothesis
which I would like to put out for reaction.
1. When I had to cut off the secondary vine which was growing on the same
side of the main as a fast growing pumpkin, the fruit stopped growing. It had
been at about 25 to 30 pounds.
2. When I grew my next best fruit on a side vine (secondary), I recalled that
experience (item 1) and let a tertiary grow, acting as a secondary, hoping
that it would feed the new fruit. In the confusion of vines and leaves
(certainly none of you have had this experience), I let a side vine grow from
the teritary, (a quadernitary?), and I buried both of these fairly well.
They, it turned out, rooted very well. The fruit grew to 597.5 pounds and won
a glorious eighth place and $50.
So, my hypothesis is that it is very good to have a side vine "feeding" the
fruit, and it is not good to whack a side vine near an established fruit.
What do you think?
