Alfalfa?

A couple of years ago I put alfalfa pellets into a new garden area, as
recommended by a local retired nurseryman.  It seemed to help, but I
cant remember the type I used.  I do remember that there was an additive
which was not good, but I dont remember which pellets were good and
which were not.  Something about a growth retardant?  Does anyone know
if the animal feed is usually OK to use or not?

(I found a new partially shaded growing area after some trees were
removed, so this is kind of on topic.)
