I have used various forms of alfalfa, and everything has grown well.
I've used the bits that break off baled alfalfa that I fed to my
goats, and pellets that I fed to the rabbits.  If you have a big
area, maybe you could just buy a bale.  Smells so good driving with
alfalfa hay in the back seat.
