monarda

What is everyone's feeling about beebalm in shade? Last year I planted one
in serious shade and it did amazingly well, though it leaned into the sun.
So I planted quite a few more. The ones next to a tree in heavily amended
soil are only about 2 inches high now, while the ones I put in a regular
shady perennial bed are about 8 inches high. All emerged very late this
spring. Is this usual? Or are they really uneager to leave the womb and
spend their lives in shade? I always have trouble getting any color in late
July in the shade so I was hoping monarda would be a solution. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Nancy S. (in NYC, zone 6B)
