Anna Mae Miller told me to plant Siberians deep--and I listened.
I plant Siberians with the crowns about 3" deep here in Zone 6-7. The
first year, they're a little slow to break dormancy, but by the second
year, they are quite strong.
I plant Japanese at least 4" deep, unless they are going in the really
wet part of the bog, then I plant them with the crown almost even with
the surface and mulch them heavily.
I have experimented with Japanese irises planted side by side at
different depths. In the first year, those planted at 6" bloomed about a
week later than those planted at 3". By the third year, they bloomed at
the same time.
If you've got some clumps that are ready to divide, you may want to
experiment a little.
