Hi Bob, and robins,
I plant all of my SI's and JI's in clay loam soil about 2" deeper than any
other plants. I have found that this helps them to weather adverse conditions
and to grow roots above the old roots and still have them not be above ground.
You might have noticed the tendency of Heucheras and Tiarellas to grow too high
above the ground on "stilts". This is actually elongation of the stem. This
happens in an abbreviated way with SI's. If you plant them deeply, they can grow
for more years still in contact with the soil and nutrients, and moisture. Jim
