Re: My Monet Weigela
Oh how right you are Lorraine,
I can give you my personnel experience with My Monet weigela. I have had it
planted in my garden for about 3 or 4 years and it has always overwintered
just fine. I am in zone 5b, they are all planted in part sun and in very
sandy soil. However, since it is a dwarf plant it tends to leaf out later
and grow slower than other forms of Weigela.
Since we are just getting into Spring here in Michigan and I have not yet
seen Forsythia bloom it would be hard to tell you how it did this year. I
know from watching it last year that it leafed out after my Wine & Roses
Weigela and before my Midnight Wine Weigela. So if you have other Weigela
that have already leafed out and bloomed I would say that it didn't make it,
but it may be due to other issues then hardiness. I would need to evaluate
it on a case by case basis.
Lorraine and Daryl are there other forms of Weigelas flushed in your part of
the woods?
Sincerely,
Danielle Ernest

Daryl,
I, too, am sad to report terrible luck w/My Monet. I've had no less than 5
or 6 in various parts of my zone 5/6 garden and none have done well. Only
one has made it through until this spring and that one is in pretty paltry
shape. I've even covered some w/nursery pots their first winter to nurse
them along, but to no avail. Yet Doreen has been able to get them to go in
her colder 4b zone.
I'm convinced it has to do with soil pH and/or drainage and/or
micronutrients, not just growing zone. I'm sure Danielle is "listening in,"
so I'd be more than interested in whatever wisdom she has to add to this
dialogue.
