Re: My Monet Weigela

Well, in the wilds of beautiful Scotts Bay, on the upper Bay of Fundy
in Nova Scotia, My Monet has sailed through its first winter. I went
out this afternoon and did the scratch test on it, and it's showing
green under its bark just fine. It's planted in real good soil (clay
that has been turned into loam by copious applications of compost and
manure over the past number of years) but I suspect the fact that it
was buried in three feet of snow for all of the worst parts of the
winter probably insulated it nicely. It being a weigela, I never
thought to baby it at all, whereas I tenderly covered my 'Green Envy'
echinaceas, 'Sunshine Blue' caryopteris and a few other things I was
worried about.

It's early days here yet, though; we only have galanthus, hamamelis,
crocus, chionodoxas and a few stalwart blooms of pulmonaria showing
yet, not even the forsythia is awake in my garden.

cheers, jodi
