I think it came down to which combination of features and price were best for my situation. The platinum provides a large reservoir mounted on the back which was important. Stainless steel was probably too high priced. The unit has to be placed against a wall, so 360° was of no use to me. Amazon has filters for it for a very reasonable price.

I see that Chewy (my favorite place to order pet supplies) has several Drinkwell fountains, including a stainless steel one. 

Did the platinum have features that steered you that way instead of the original or 360?
